Milan's Rotonda della Besana has featured a particularly colourful past, with the building being home to a host of different uses in Milan.
Designed in 1695 by Francesco Raffagno, the Rotonda della Besana was originally the cemetery for the nearby Ca' Granda Hospital. In 1783 it was closed and an estimated 150,000 people were buried in the crypts beneath the arcades.
The Rotonda della Besana has since housed patients with infectious diseases, contained the hospital laundry and is now used for many important, temporary exhibitions and seasonal Milan attractions and events. Also, during the summer months, there is an outdoor cinema where a number of different films are screened.
