Originally located on this Porta Ticinese site in Milan was a small port dating back to Roman times, where the Norone and Seveso rivers met and converged into the Vettabbia canal.
In 1329, Milan's striking Porta Ticense city gate was remodelled by Azzone Visconti. The Porta Ticinese city gate was decorated with a large and impressive tabernacle of the Madonna and Child with St. Ambrose holding a model of the city, which was constructed during the 14th century by Giovanni di Balduccio. Milan's Porta Ticinese city gate quickly became one of Milan's major landmarks and attractions.
In 1865, the Milan Porta Ticinese city gate was fortified with two towers and is now only one of two still city gates still remaining in Milan, with the other gate being the Porta Nuova on Via Manzoni.
